IHOP – Denver Omelette Burger

When I think of IHOP, I immediately think pancakes.  And why not? It’s the International House of them! But today, we’re going to take a look at something completely different from the IHOP menu.

Formed in 1957, IHOP quickly became a popular dining destination for those looking for a fast casual breakfast dining experience. The restaurant chain currently has over 1,600 locations in North America, and Middle East.  And while the pancakes do remain high on the list of best sellers, IHOP also has a menu of lunch and dinner items, including the new Denver Omelette Burger.

Those of you familiar with omelettes will know that it typically consists of lightly scrambled eggs, poured thin on a pan, fried, filled with ingredients and then folded. The Denver Omelette is one of the most popular omelettes.  Served particularly in the south west, it is filled with diced ham, bell peppers, onions and topped with cheese.

IHOP has taken the popular “egg on a burger” and changed it up by adding a bell pepper and onion omelette with 2 slices of ham on top of the burger with cheese, all on a brioche bun.

Looks wise, the burger wasn’t very well put together.  It’s as if someone in the kitchen tossed all the ingredients in the air and they all happened to land on top of the bun.  The omelette was far too large and unevenly shaped to allow for consistency in flavor across the whole burger.

A bite of the burger led through layers of disappointment. The flavor was completely missing from this burger. The bun had the chewy, wet consistency of microwaved bread. The ham was flavorless and rubbery.  The egg was like a wet sponge, filled with bell peppers and onions that must have soaked overnight to extract any flavor. The hamburger patty lacked any seasoning, keeping in line with the rest of this pitiful flavorless mess.

The upside though is that the fries were unlimited!

Summary

Hamburgers are wonderful. Hamburgers with eggs on them are also wonderful.

Hamburgers with eggs on them from IHOP... not so much.

For 2 straight days after eating this abomination, I found myself making a mad dash for the toilet every 2 hours.

While the idea is not bad, it really falls short in executing something palatable. I'd say if you're gonna go to IHOP, stick with the pancakes... at least any off flavors there can be covered up in 1 of 4 signature syrups!

So I'm a bit late to this but this whole thing is crazy. This is the only burger I'd get from here. I would make it a point to go to ihop just for this (and unlimited iced coffee). You must have had a bad experience. If only they still had it so you could try it again.
